"TEEN SUMMER EXPO"
SPONSORED BY THE ARLINGTON EMPLOYMENT CENTER APRIL 26, 2003

ARLINGTON - It's coming to the end of the school year. Business is going to be picking up, extra help might be needed; students will be looking for something to do, trying to make money* Mmmm. Sounds like there are some people who should meet.

ARLINGTON'S TEEN SUMMER EXPO, now in its seventh year, offers an introduction. On April 26th at Washington-Lee High School from 11am-1pm, the EXPO will connect local businesses and citizens with teens to fill summer needs. Sponsored by the Arlington Employment Center, the EXPO cuts employers' advertising and recruiting costs while helping Arlington youth find jobs.

Former community volunteer coordinators have said, "Each year employers, both businesses and families, have told me that the EXPO has been their best source for reliable and qualified teens to fill summer positions," says volunteer. "With EXPO attendance growing each year, and over a thousand talented, enthusiastic teens expected this year, it really is the ideal way to find just the right summer employee or volunteer."

Nancy Dean, Manager at the Virginia Employment Commission, has participated in the EXPO for the last several years. "The participation among employers, students, families and community agencies is extraordinary," says Dean. "As a parent of an Arlington graduate I can give personal praises; my son got his first summer job as a junior and has been going back to this job every summer, even in his college years."

Some employers will exhibit their job opportunities, while other local groups will present youth summer programs and volunteer opportunities. Employment professionals will advise students and parents on work permits and interviewing. Teens can then clarify options before exploring job postings and exhibits.

Hundreds of jobs ranging from Brand Representatives for Abercrombie and Fitch to Park Rangers for the Northern Virginia Park Authority will be available. Internships at companies like The Levine School of Music will be posted, in addition to dozens of restaurant positions, lifeguarding opportunities and much more.

Karen Whitehead, Regional Manager of Winkler Pool Management, Inc. will be exhibiting jobs at the EXPO. " We love it because every year, more and more students come back," says Whitehead, who has come back, herself, the last several years. "This is great for us because Arlington is such a big area for our company."

The EXPO is free for all participants and no pre-registration is required for teens. Also, this year the Arlington Employment Center will host a pre-employment workshop for all teens at Washington and Lee from 9:00a.m.-11:00p.m. the day of the expo.  All parents are encouraged to attend. To post a job with the EXPO, visit www.arlingtonteensummerexpo.com   Free exhibition space is available although employers need not attend to post a position.
