SCHOLARSHIP INTRO

Christopher Vuturo, author of The Scholarship Advisor has the following tips for high school students who want to enhance the prospects of earning a scholarship for college:

  • Scholarships are not just awarded to A students and athletes

Scholarship eligibility can be based on work experience, religion, ethnicity, residency,  race, gender or your parent's work or military background. We'd add area of study and high school.

  • Start searching now.

Don't wait until your senior year.  Choices made throughout your high school career affect your prospects.

  • Get in "scholarship shape"

Get involved in extracurricular and volunteer activities.  Keep records of your activities and supervisor's names and numbers for future reference. There's a reason your parents are after you to work hard.

  • Do your homework.

Consult guidebooks, websites, local organizations, employers and the Yorktown Guidance office and teachers for leads.

  • Keep at it.

Diligence and persistence pays.  Your odds improve as you improve your record and apply for more awards.

We're trying to pull together scholarship references.  Please let us know what we've missed. Here's what we've been able to do so far:

Arlington School Board Database of local scholarships (http://158.59.252.20:591/s_s/scholarships/)

We salute the Arlington School Board's exciting efforts to put this great new tool into the hands of our Arlington Scholars and the County's professional Guidance Staff! This database of local scholarships promises to be a major local resource. It will take some time for all the information available to be loaded, so keep checking back.

For more information on each scholarship that is listed in response to your search click on the text in the left column in the search-results table.

Our scholarships aren't listed, because they are so new they are not adequately funded to permit an award.

  • The David Charlebois [YHS 80] Memorial Fund at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

David's parents would like any donations to go to a fund that has been established in David's name at his alma mater, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The flyer we were given about it reads as follows:

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has pledged its uniquely applicable resources, and has created the David Charlebois Memorial Fund, dedicated to helping beat terrorism in the air, (like a life-threatening disease), so that David shall not have died in vain. If you care to participate, make checks payable to: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114-3900, Attn. Harry Jennings 386 226-6197.

Glossary of Financial Aid Terms

FAFSA, COA, EFC, FSEOP. . .??? Do you know what these terms mean? The world of financial aid requires an understanding of the terminology. This section provides a glossary of more than 70 financial aid terms. Click here or surf to: http://12.47.197.196/schoolgrants/glossary.cfm

We are also working on:

  • Funding the two merit scholarships established earlier this Fall (see Matching Gifts below to leverage your gifts)
  • Making sure we've included all the Scholarships administered by YHS.

Matching Gifts

  • Looking for a way to increase your gift?  Over 7,500 business have gift-matching programs for their employees. While specifics may vary, generally the steps to have your employer match your gift are as follows.  Please note, verifying whether your employer has a matching program, you only are involved with the first two of the following steps, we take care of the rest:

Step 1. Get a matching gift form from your employer (usually from the human resources department)

Step 2. Complete the form, and send it along with a donation

Step 3. The recipient certifies on the form that it has received your gift and that it meets our guidelines for receiving matching gifts.

Step 4. We then return the signed form to your employer

Step 5. Your employer verifies your eligibility and ours and sends a check with its matching funds to us.

For more details on corporate employee gift matching programs, click here to contact the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for more information.

Then, push the Back key on your web-browser to return to our site, and send us the name of your employer to check if they have a gift-matching program, and it's general terms donations@yorktownalums.org.  If they do, we'll give you information about their program,  and a contact within your company to contact for more information and to get a copy of their matching gift form.

To see what else is in store, see the Planned Giving Section of this site.  To get involved with our Scholarship efforts, please let us know.

Unfortunately for today's students, because we're so new, we currently have only information to offer, but no money. We hope to change that in the near future.
